I've been in the health industry for 20 years and run multiple wellness businesses. Finally, I've learned that the easiest way for me to support my mental health and self care needs is to follow my Human Design Strategy and Authority. Discovering these elements completely shifted how I interact in the world, softening my workaholic mind to listen more to my body. To recognise when self care is what I need to do, and then actually follow through with making the appointment (not just overthink it). Following my Strategy and Authority helps me be more calm, healthy, and focused on a daily basis.

I experience different kinds of pressure from handling a business, my family, and my mental health. I always avoid burnout as it is not just emotionally exhausting but also hinders my productivity. I have been dealing with high-stress & emotionally charged cases for many years now. I learned early on the importance of taking care of my mental health and selfcare. As a CEO, I am responsible not only for the success of my business but also for the well-being of my employees and clients. This responsibility can take a toll on one's mental health if not managed properly. I take care of myself by carving out time for activities I enjoy outside of work, such as being a Kizomba instructor & the chairman of a basketball club. That’s why when I’m managing my fully remote team, we all take accountability for our tasks and have mutual trust, which allows me to work flexibly without having to micromanage all operations.

To avoid burnout, finding balance and prioritizing selfcare has been key. Recognizing when I'm pushing too hard and allowing myself time to rest and recharge has made a significant difference. After running a business for four decades with the highs and lows, my top priority is taking care of my mental health & well-being. Here are my 3 routines that helped me stay balanced & focused. Daily Meditation: My day starts with a 15-minute meditation session, which helps me clear my mind & set intentions for the day. Journaling: Writing down my thoughts, worries, & achievements helps me process my emotions & stay organized. Disconnecting: When stressed, I make it a point to disconnect from work & spend quality time with my family or engage in hobbies that I enjoy.

I take care of my mental health by religiously following the “No-Email Sunday” policy. This day, I am deliberately cutting myself off from work emails, allowing myself the opportunity to detach from the noise of the corporate world. I engage in activities that feed my mind such as hanging out with my family, doing my own projects, or just having those “me” moments. This purposeful rest restores my energy as well as shows the importance of work-life balance. “No-Email Sunday” is more than a policy; it is selfcare, starting the following week in a different atmosphere with a renewed attitude.

#11- By spending time with loved ones

While the nature of my “owner and CEO” role means I'm constantly engaged, the traditional 9-to-5 structure doesn't really apply. I don't always get to spend as much time with my family as I'd like. That's why I make it a priority to set aside one full day each week, usually on Sundays, for quality time with my loved ones, especially my children. This has become a cherished self-care tradition for me. Engaging in activities like playing with my kids and giving them my undivided attention brings me joy and gives me a much-needed break from any work-related stress. It's during these bonding moments in my small family that I find solace and rejuvenate my mental well-being.

Looking after yourself is essential to deliver high-quality work, focus and be creative. Over the last decade, I have learned that my morning routine is essential to set myself up for an energised work day. My routine includes pranayama, strength training, journalling, and deciding on my one most important goal of the day. I also have time blocks in my calendar for lunch breaks, no-meeting time before and after important meetings, and have work notifications switched off on my phone. I continue to reflect on these routines and adjust them if needed.

One key aspect for me is establishing a solid work-life balance. It's all too easy to get caught up in the demands of running a company, but I make a conscious effort to set boundaries. One approach I've found effective is practicing mindfulness and meditation. It's not about completely emptying my mind of thoughts (which can feel impossible sometimes!), but rather about acknowledging them without judgment. Taking even just a few minutes each day to center myself, focus on my breath, and let go of any stress or worries has been incredibly beneficial. #16- Setting aside time for self care

Business owners are always busy, and sometimes it comes at the expense of our self care. There will always be more to do and another reason to put things off, which is why I recommend setting aside dedicated time for yourself. That could mean getting up early before work to eat breakfast with your family, go for a jog with your dog, or take time for your hobbies. It could mean picking one day of the week when you’re not going to work late because you have a date night, soccer practice, pottery class, or whatever it is you’d like to make time to do.

I am an advocate of intermittent fasting to improve my focus and productivity. Years had passed before I realized I had been using food as a coping mechanism for stress and anxiety. Since then, I have made sure to explore how fasting can help me better manage my mental health and increase my energy levels. The result? With a clear mind and more energy, I can fully dedicate myself to my business goals and take care of my well-being at the same time.

#18- Going for a hike

There are many advantages to being a CEO, but it is also a lot of hard work. We’re a family business, which makes it especially important for me to model selfcare. I love exercise, and nature, so going for a hike is a supreme act of selfcare, and something I do as often as I’m able. I’m inspired by the Scandinavian concept of hygge, and I try to bring elements of this into every aspect of my life. This isn’t showy selfcare, but more a sensation of quiet, constant comfort. Finding small, simple ways to support wellbeing is better than a grand gesture every now and again.

I've learned that my well-being is crucial to my success. It's a bit like skincare – you need to stick to a routine to have the best results. So, I start each day with a positive mindset, appreciating the journey I'm on. Working out is also part of my routine – it's my stress-buster and mood-lifter. As a freelance content creator and SEO expert, selfcare is a nonnegotiable as it is vital in keeping me accountable for my well-being. Whether it be my emotional, mental, or physical health, I cannot do my best work without caring for myself. My self care routine takes on several different looks depending on what my day has in store. It generally begins with a warm cup of coffee & an afternoon walk outside with my newborn and dog. It usually ends with some evening yoga/stretching before a warm bath. It may not seem like much, but those small moments to yourself often make the biggest impact on your day.

Running a business can be exhausting, and frequently, selfcare finds itself on the back burner. I recommend setting time aside for selfcare each day to ensure you don’t get burnt out. Some of my favorite forms of selfcare are having coffee and breakfast in the morning with my family and focusing on what’s going on with them instead of just thinking about work, planning movie nights with my family, and ensuring there is time set aside for my hobbies.

#22- Finding someone external who is brutally honest

As a business owner and employer, you often can’t tell your staff how you really feel, your worries, your concerns, etc. Therefore, you need to find someone external to your business – a peer with that you can be brutally honest with who understands your industry/how your business works. I've always found that's key to supporting my mental health. Having a network of people who you feel comfortable sharing with is incredibly refreshing when you’re around people all day who you can’t be as open with.

#22- By relaxing rather than working

For us, self care is a rare moment that we get to spend relaxing rather than working. We try to fit in time to do something enjoyable and not work-related every week, because this is important for our mental health, as well as our relationship as a husband and wife team. Sometimes this can be as simple as sitting down to watch an episode of our favorite show. It’s important to make sure that running a company does not begin to run your life, so make sure to set aside a little time for yourself.

To start my day right, I engage in physical exercise – often a morning walk around the neighborhood.
